Many people were moved and sad with tears by the movie “Hachiko” for the loyalty and persistence. In our lives, there’s even little such simple and persistent sentiment from others. So, we can’t help being visibly moved.

The emotion between human and animal is just that subtle. I know you won’t hurt me, I won’t hurt you as well. We are friends then. There is no complicated benefit in common, but the communication of hearts.

In the 47 days of self-help tourism in US, one of the things that impressed us the most is the zero-distance contact between people and wildlife.

Whether in American cities or rural areas, varieties of beautiful birds go everywhere, which made me surprised constantly who get used to see sparrows and crows at home. In the center of Philadelphia, the Nicaragua waterfall side, the green open space of Fort McHenry, we saw crowds of wild geese busy in foraging, or resting leisurely. In this place as beautiful as a painting, I was walking among the geese; some of them keep pace with me, which is really intoxicating.

At the roadside of Miami, egrets were flying besides us. At the hot spring of Harrison Lake, birds asked us for food. The seagulls were stretching the wings to follow us on board when the pleasure-boat was leaving the port. In the sunny blue sky above cities, on the azure blue sea surface, hundreds of thousands of birds were often seen. On the stone platform of Central Town Park, the branch of the both sides of streets, the rails of traffic lights, the windowsill of residents, the multicolored figures of unknown birds go everywhere with their clear and melodious sounds.

When we just saw the deer in US, we exclaimed in surprise “Look!”, getting out our cameras in a hurry to take the photo of their sturdy silhouette and miraculous antlers for the preservation into our albums. Later at the forest side of National Park, in the thick growth of grass, the thick growth of grass, on the pavement of residential areas, the schoolyard of West Point, we could see deer crowds crossed the roads individually or in threes and fives, just as if no one was nearby, foraging leisurely. All the people feel nothing strange since such scenes were often seen.

Adorable squirrels in USA could be found everywhere, staring at you with bright little eyes, sticking their bushy tails up, running around here and there, really delightful. They are not only active in forest, meadow, also take residential compounds as their own home for granted. They asked the tourists in Colorado Valley for food by scratching their hands, or goggling at pedestrians on the stone steps of Washington Monument. If you gave something that it liked, it devoured in delight. If you didn’t, “Snort!” turning its head and run away.

On one of the highway side, I was driving through a forest area, an orange fox emerged suddenly with its enchanting body. It was so beautiful! But it paused by the road only for two seconds, and turned back, disappearing in the woods. Only the guide brother in auxiliary driver seat and I enjoyed this moment before the other friends in the vehicle got the chance to feast the eyes.

The ferocious wildlife such as bears, wolves, and wild buffalos were also seen everywhere in National park. In the mysterious Yellowstone, I saw a robust buffalo was eating grass at the road side. After a while, “splash!” a huge stream of pee, later followed a big pile of shit. So lively! We were enjoying this in silence by keeping a distance. If we walked closely to it, it could probably overturn us to the ground without politeness, and poke a hole on us.

At the fisherman dock of San Francisco, I saw a hundred of sea dogs in the wooden plank road, resting lazily with muffled snarling from time to time. Each of them are fatty, charmingly naïve with oil-glowing furs.

The reason that American wildlife can live in harmony and amity with human is, I think, lies in tow factors:

One is the weather and geography. America has the extensive spaces for wildlife. For the part of area, America has the third largest among them. But has the largest livable area than the other two. During the self-help driving along the western and eastern coast of America for 13 000 kilometers, we hadn’t seen a desert. What’s more, there are few Gobi and wilderness where there still has grass. Except for the vast expanse of cultivated lands and pastures through which there were the stretching hundreds of miles of forest, snaky rivers, and transparent lakes, which comes into being a paradise of wildlife.

The other is the support of people. The reasonable, sound laws and regulations, the feasible enforcement, the folkway of protecting animals are all dispensable to the survival of wildlife. A full set of laws and regulations about protecting animals has been made from American federal government to state governments. Also they’ve been executed by professional personnel according to the laws which make the enforcement process reasonable and logical strictly. Kids accept the education of protecting environment and animals, knowing the coexistence relationship of human and nature.

In Yellowstone, I saw some iron dustbin in special shape, very rigid. Originally I felt strange, later learned to know this kind of dustbin can prevent from the attack from large animals, keeping them from being poisoned by garbage. In order to protect fishes, government permits the finishing for the amusement, but fishers have to handle the related procedures, and set free those fishes less than a certain specification. On the highway where the wildlife resided, there were exclusive over line bridges for their convenience to climb across the highway at intervals. On which the trees, grasslands combined with the environment perfectly.

One day, at my younger sister’s home in San Jose, we had a seafood meal. She told me, the lid of seafood household garbage can had to be closed tightly to avoid being eaten by wildlife to get a disease. At night my sister often could hear small animals such as badgers, snakes, cats, hedgehogs, squirrels came to the garbage can. Sometimes they couldn’t open the lid, jumping around on there angrily, which hears pretty interesting.

There are a lot of road signs “Beware of animals“ on the both sides of the road, but it is inevitable all the same for the speedy vehicles and wildlife collide. Such collisions happen every day. I encountered such an unspeakable thing, after the consideration, decided to talk in public.

One day I was driving on a highway, seeing there was a little squirrel crossed the road from my right side, running straightly. I slowed down immediately, and was confident it could do it safely. But, absolutely unexpected, it came back immediately as soon as it arrived at the left side of road! Very clearly, I felt there sounded a “click” under my left wheel. I couldn’t help exclaim for it, but after all we were on the highway. I was in charge of the seven lives in my vehicle. I must grab the steering wheel to have it run straightly, and then stopped in a safe area. A stream of tears fell down after I got off my vehicle. It was hard to describe to such a grief. For a long time after that, I would feel panicked as long as I saw any creatures moving ahead on the road. The feeling of guilty doesn’t vanish till today though my friends comforted me it was not fault.

I love all of my friends, can’t imagine how I will live without my friends. Animals are human’s friends. I can’t dare imagine how human will live without animals. They not only bring the substantial demands of people, but also the tremendous mental pleasure. There are so many of loving stories at home or abroad between people and animals. I expect human is not animals’ predators’ forever, but the eternal reliable friends of them.
